A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a Bluestone Cottage chalky paint workshop. I can not thank Pamela enough for hosting the most wonderful and inspiring day! For anyone interested in learning from the BEST (thank you Pamela!) I would highly recommend registering for a Bluestone Cottage workshop with a few friends! Contact Pamela at [email protected] for more details.
Look at this amazing space! How could you not be inspired!
At this workshop attendees were asked to bring a small piece of furniture to paint that day. I brought this french provincial style occasional chair and let’s just say the original fabric was not my favourite! Having cruised Pinterest the night before I was dead set on painting the fabric with chalky paint. With Pamela’s help I was able to create a look I LOVE and I will show you all how I did it!
Step 1: Lightly dampen the upholstery with water. For this application I used the Bluestone extra large brush.
Step 2: Water down the chalky paint colour of your choice (I used Driftwood for the fabric). I used about a 70% Driftwood chalky paint and 30% water mixture to paint the upholstery. Again for applying the paint mixture I used an extra large brush.
Step 3: Between paint coats let the fabric dry. I waited about 20 minutes. To cover this dark green floral upholstery I needed to do 3 coats of watered down Driftwood paint.
Step 4: I used French Country to bring out the detail of the French Provincial chair arms and legs. And once it had dried I used a sanding block to achieve the shabby chic look.
Step 5: To finish I buffed the entire chair with Bluestone Cottage Beeswax (a very thin layer over the painted upholstery). The beeswax will take a few days or even a week to cure but in the long run it protects the fabric and seals in the colour!
What do you guys think? I am SO happy with it! What a transformation! Let us know in the comments below if you’ve ever used chalky paint on upholstery. And once again I highly recommend attending a Bluestone Cottage workshop if you are interested in learning about Pamela’s fabulous line of paints, her website and information are listed below.
